I had the opportunity to walk around the city of Reykjavik in Iceland on an embarkation day on the Seabourn Quest. Embarkation days are days when the previous guest passengers have concluded their cruise and left the ship. For about 4-6 hours, there are mainly only crew members on board the vessel preparing cabins and getting the boat ready for the following passengers to arrive. On this day, I had the morning off with a few other colleagues, and we spent the morning walking around the city for coffee and to find props for a handshake video. The two crew members I was with were Emily Worsnop and Sonja van Wyk. Emily is the Mindful Living Coach on the ship, and Sonja is the hairdresser and my hairstylist. After going to one of my favorite cafes after visiting Reykjavik numerous times called Café Babalú. We went to a convenience store and found two overly priced plastic Viking swords to use in an impromptu uncoordinated handshake video in front of the famous Iglesia Hallgrímskirkja. I was impressed with Sonja that we were able to do our handshake video in one take with the swords, and funny that we were both able to time throw our swords over our shoulders at the same time.
Sonja is from the beautiful country of South Africa and, more specifically, from the coast being, Jeffrey's Bay. When first meeting Sonja, I could tell she had an endless amount of life stories and would easily be able to fit those into a book. She is the mix of a deep hippie soul with a full laugh that is always passing off good energy to those she has the opportunity to share her energy. Sonja is around 30 years older than me, and I refer to her as my ship mother and often would help me out when I would spend too much time on the crew deck receiving sun and sunburned. She has all these top-notch and creative remedies on the spot to help, for instance, using a bicarbonate paste on my sunburn, and she is always excited to make it to shore off the crew ship and explore the ship's destinations.
When updating this post, Sonja is the proud owner of BellAmore Hair Salon in Jeffrey's Bay, South Africa. Keep up your passion for hair and spread value to your community.
