It started like any other time during my cruise contract. I went to my cabin in the Seabourn Quest. I changed into my street clothes to leave the ship and explore the city the ship was currently docked in (the location Rouen, France). As I was leaving the ship, I met up with several colleagues from the spa (my department on the Seabourn Quest). I talked to these crew members, and we discussed what city area we would like to visit. As we left and walked around the town, I was with two crew members, Reiko Manti and Gill Grier. Reiko is the acupuncturist on the ship and is originally from Japan. Gill is the hairdresser on the Seabourn Quest and is from Ireland.
After hanging out with them for some time in Rouen, we continually discussed the possibility of traveling to Paris as Rouen was located a little less than 2 hours away. We had time to do so because we didn't have to be back on the ship until the following morning. After all, the ship had an overnight in Rouen. And like any other crew member that works on cruise ships, "overnights" are to be taken advantage of by spending as much time as possible off the boat.
What transpired for our adventure was Gill getting looked at and shouted out in French by a tall, muscular french man criticizing her for the fur outfit she had on that was given to her by her ship roommate—then taking a bus from Rouen to a town slightly in between Rouen and Paris to make it to our next area of transportation, a train. Now this particle time of year, Pairs and parts of France were experiencing a labor shortage or strikes from the individuals working on trains. This made it extra hard to find many options to make it to Paris, but we managed. Once at the station in Paris, we took a car to the Eifel Tower and proceeded to walk up the tower for the next hour and get as high as possible. There is a restaurant on the second floor of the building. The view was a spectacle at night with all the prominent landmarks lit up, making for a picturesque nighttime view. The tower lit up with lights during our descent, and a big light show began. This led me to get the idea of finding a place where I could take a video of a handshake with the tower in the background. After finding a location, Reiko and I quickly devised choreography and made our handshake video. What you see in both of our hands are macarons.

Reiko is from Tokyo, Japan, and is the acupuncturist on the ship. Upon updating this article in 2022. Reiko is the proud owner and founder of "Rophe Tokyo," a private acupuncture and treatment salon for therapists with 20 years of experience as an esthetician, cosmetology school instructor, and cruise ship acupuncturist. They are celebrating their third year of business, and I wish you continual success, Reiko!
While working with Reiko on the cruise ship, it became a common practice for spa crew members to trade services with each other. For example, I would give a private gym training session one-on-one in exchange for an acupuncture session. This led me to have acupuncture on my back, face, and ears. The most interesting session of acupuncture I have had with Reiko was having cupping done to me on my back. Pictures see below. Reiko used these silicone cups, which helped improve blood circulation, swelling, and sensitivity to cold. Additional benefits can be improving the range of motion of joints, such as enhancing fascial adhesions.
Thank you, Reiko Mitani, for the handshake and sharing in the macarons! I wish you continued success and thank you for the acupuncture services. You are an expert in your field, and I highly recommend your acupuncture service.
