My reason for being in Birmingham, England, was to have a job interview with Steiner International (one of the leading recruiting agencies) for hiring workers for cruise ships. Birmingham is a city of over 1 million people, and it was the first time I had been this far up north in England. The interview starts off with a large group presentation to over 60 other interviewees on what to expect from working on a cruise ship. I was the only American and absolutely the only Alaskan in the room, as the rest of the people applying for the job were from the United Kingdom or other areas of Europe. I remember sitting next to a gentleman who told me he was from the town that William Shakespeare was from, Stratford-upon-Avon. I definitely didn't know that. I was interviewing to become a personal trainer on a cruise ship, and of the 60 people I mentioned, only a few were doing the same. The rest were applying to do jobs in spa and beauty positions. After the presentation, three other gentlemen and I went to a separate room to begin the interview process, which consisted of demonstrating our spontaneity for showing the recruiter that we could train guests on a ship by being enthusiastic and creative. I had to train the other three gentlemen through a workout I came up with on the spot and used the items I found around me to include in the workout: plastic knives and forks, water bottles and chairs. Afterward, when the recruiter left and was making their decision, I decided then and there to have a filmed conversation where I asked the three other gentlemen what you wanted to do before they died. Three specific moments of inspiration that gave me this idea came from working at the Center of Recovery and Exercise, being a hospice volunteer for the program no one dies alone, and watching a short video on a high school girl who had created a well-documented video project where she went around to different parts of the world and asked this very question. 2017 has been a year for me to reflect on my life and be around many people who are in situations with regret, suffering, or coming towards the end of their existence, and it has led me to want to explore and document what I find out from others and myself as to "What do I want to do before I die?". I'm grateful to have started this process of asking others this question, and I'm excited to see where it goes. You can take a look at the exercise I did while in training to become a vigil volunteer for the hospice program at in Orlando, Florida, and everything I have written down before about what I want to do before I die.
I have to note that because I asked these gentlemen before finding out if we had gotten hired there, answers were a sign of where their headspace was. That being fitness and travel. Upon watching the video, you will hear one man saying that he wants to live in New York City or Las Angeles and another talking about a specific weight that he wants to bench press. Well, thus begins hearing what others want to do with their life. Let's go! By the way, I did get the job to work on cruise ships, and I will soon enough be sailing the seven seas!
And below is a series of workout videos with my TRX I performed from atop a parking garage that I found that was very close to my hotel in Birmingham near the airport. TRX and always move all the time๐ช๐ป
